IMPROVEMENT OF AIR CARGO BUSINESS AT VELANA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Velana International Airport, Maldives 31st January 2019 – Maldives Airports Company Ltd’s (MACL) Cargo Services has shown a drastic increase in the Cargo throughput within the past 5 years. As per the statistical information, the overall tonnage from 2013 to 2018 has increased by 37% with an overall increment of 240% from cargo business growth.
Cargo Services took initiatives on a five-year plan to increase the overall efficiency of cargo operations as well as cargo business growth. This boost in the overall growth is by the introduction of new services like export physical handling, introduction of new RA3 (European Standard) certified transshipment gateways, facilitating porter services for export customers, Introduction of temperature controlled storage facilities for import customers & overall increase of cargo import capacity by extending the warehouse capacity by 200% .
Major Business Contributing Factors are Import throughput – 62%, Cold storage – 13%, Export throughput– 13%, Transshipment throughput & others–12% . Already MACL Cargo Services has made plans for the next five years (2019-2024) which will lead to an increase in business growth.
